For Federal legislation, print and online editions of the U.S. Code have Popular Name Tables for searching the names by which pieces of legislation are commonly called.

  • Print
    • The "Table of Popular Names" is located at the end of the volume set of the United States Code, the United States Code Service (Lexis), and the United State Code Annotated (Westlaw)
  • Online:
    • Lexis: Statutes & Legislation > Federal > USCS Popular Names Table
    • Westlaw: Statutes & Court Rules > United States Code Annotated (USCA) > United States Code Annotated Popular Name Table (under TOOLS & RESOURCES)

For Michigan legislation, search for popular names on the Michigan Legislature website using an Advanced MCL Search. The "Popular Name" category searches through popular name attribute, short title attribute, and editor heading attribute.

For other states' legislation, the last index volume of any West collection of state statutes contains a popular name table at the end of the volume. You can also check the state's legislature website for a popular name search function or table.
